Our Junior program is geared towards teaching safety and the fundamental skills of firefighting to our local youth, while also promoting community leadership and responsibility. Our Junior members range from the ages of 16 to 17. After they turn 18, they are eligible to be sworn into the active department as a probationary member. They learn all about the tools of our trade, firefighting techniques, what it means to be a community leader, and everything in between. They will also be introduced to basic first aid and become CPR-certified.
The training program for our Junior program is structured much like the active firefighters of the department. This will put those Juniors that join the department at an advantage, as they have already begun their training and are ready to advance as an active member. Junior members will also be able to participate in department parades, fundraising events, local community events, fire department drills with limited involvement at fire calls as recommended by the NYS OFPC guidelines on junior firefighters and HFFD SOP's.
Our Junior Program builds confidence and character in these members, and hopefully will give them a sense of community responsibility. Being a member of the department will also create a lot of other opportunities, such as excellent college scholarship programs and networking opportunities.
The Junior members meet every week with the Active Fire Firefighters, and on predetermined dates and times to train with their mentors. Our program is both curriculum-based as well as hands-on oriented. New members are always welcome, and of course parents and prospective members are welcome to sit in and see what we do.
